John H. Stone (1832-1907)
John H. Stone was born August 12, 1832, in Charles County MD. He had several brothers and sisters and his father, a tax collector for the county, died when he was young. His mother remarried, but he was raised by an older brother. In 1860 he lived with his brother Joseph, who was married and owned 16 slaves. John was single and owned one slave. Their residence was Doncaster, near Port tobacco and they were farmers. He enlisted June 15, 1861 in Richmond, VA, and was a corporal, promoted to Sgt., in Capt. Michael Robertson's Company I, First MD. Reg't. When they disbanded he reenlisted in Co. B, 2nd MD Inf (First MD Batt'n.) as a Lt.
He served in this capacity through the war. He was wounded severely in the left thigh by a gunshot wound at Cold Harbor, VA on June 3, 1864. He was in hospital until Jan. 1865 when he was sent to Salisbury NC to assist Bradley Johnson in running a POW camp. There is no record of his surrender or capture.
After the war he was connected with the Wheeler and Wilson Sewing Machine Co. in Norfolk and other southern cities. He retired in 1902 to Baltimore where he died in 1907 from complications of a broken hip and old age. He is buried in Cathedral Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.
