Alleghany County was formed by an act of the 1858-59 session of the North Carolina legislature out of the northeastern portion of Ashe County. Early records found in Ashe County, Wilkes County, Surry County, Rowan County, amd Anson County date back to the mid 1700s. The First Families Project seeks to document the first families to settle in this area. Surnames of early setlers include Osborne, Gambill, Cox, Bryant, McMillan, Tolliver, Woodruff, Simmons, Crouse, Edwards, Pennington, Jones and Choate.
