Historical Notes:
The Virginia 9th Infantry Battalion was organized in June, 1861, with four companies. During the spring of 1862 it merged into the 25th Regiment Virginia Infantry. Officers:

  • (Letcher Guard) (Became 2nd Company A of 25th Infantry in 1862)- Taylor County

  • (Capt. William H. Mollohan's Company) (Became 2nd Company G of 25th Infantry in 1862) - Braxton County and Webster County West Virginia

  • (Braxton Blues) (Became 2nd Company C of 25th Infantry in 1862) - Braxton County

  • (Pocahontas Rescues) (Became Company I of 25th Infantry in 1862) -Pocahontas County West Virginia


  • (Capt. George W. Hansbrough's Company) (Consolidated with Letcher Guard) Taylor County

    The organization of the 25th lists the following companies from the 9th Battalion, but no rosters have been found.

    Company E, Fighting Company E (composed from several parts of depleted companies)
    Company F, Highland County, Capt. George Madison Karicofe
    Company G, Mollohan's Company, Capt. William H. Mollohan
    Company I, Pocahontas Rescuers, Capt. Daniel A. Stofer
