HISTORICAL NOTES:
15th Cavalry Regiment was organized during the early summer of 1862 with about 1,000 men. Some of its members were raised at Fort Worth and Wolfe City, and in Wise and Hood counties. After serving in the Department of Texas, it was dismounted and ordered to Arkansas. Here the unit was captured at Arkansas Post in January, 1863. Exchanged and reorganized, it was consolidated with the 6th and 10th Regiments and assigned to Deshler's, J.A. Smith's, and Granbury's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. It participated in many battles from Chickamauga to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and fought in North Carolina. The 6th/10th/15th lost 20 killed, 95 wounded, and 28 missing of the 667 engaged at Chickamauga and totalled 642 men and 437 arms in December, 1863. Few surrendered on April 26, 1865.
