The Civil War in South Carolina
Index to South Carolina Events in the
Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies

See under "South Carolina" in section J (List of Principal Military Operations by State and Date) for remarks on the status and extent of this State during the Civil War and for a list of volumes and index entries covering operations in the State.

Adams Run (or River), atlas 144:D- 12/13.

[-----Union demonstration from North Edisto River towards, Jan. 30, 1865] (Campaign of the Carolinas). See O.R., Navies, I, 16:206, 212, 219.

Aiken, atlas 143:E/F-8/9; 144:A/B-8/9.
-----action at, Feb. 11, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3, In1151; 99:In1474; 111:In1070. Disregard index references to reports of Sherman and Wheeler in Serial 98, and see also 98:903. NOTE:This operation was part of a single running fight that took place between Johnson's Station and Aiken. The editors of the army-records compilation recognized separate skirmishes at each location.

Angley's Post Office [Angley's], atlas 139:G-1; 143:G-10; 144:C-10.
skirmish at, Feb. 4, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1152. See also 98:272.

Ashepoo River, atlas 139:H-2; 143:H-11/12; 144:D-11/12, E-12.
-----skirmish on the, May 16 [26], 1864, 65:Ev2. Union troops engaged per battle list (a) 34th U.S. Colored Inf. (Volunteer Army Register, 8:205; five men killed). NOTE:The May 16 date for this skirmish apparently represents an error by the editors of the army-records compilation that may be based on the corresponding entry in the Volunteer Army Register. Battle list (a) notes no action on the Ashepoo River on May 16, but lists a skirmish as occurring there on May 26 and involving the 34th U.S. Colored Inf. The return submitted by that regt. for May 1864 lists no deaths as occurring on May 16, but for May 26 lists five men killed and eight men drowned in the vicinity of the Ashepoo River. It is probable that this entry is duplicative of the separately recognized entry "[Confederate] destruction of United States transport Boston at Chapman's Fort [on the] Ashepoo River, May 26, 1864" since the location and casualties reported for that operation correspond with those in the regtl. return noted above.
-----[Confederate] destruction of United States transport Boston at Chapman's Fort Ion thel, May 26, 1864. SEE UNDER "Boston."
Barker's Mill, Whippy Swamp atlas 79:3 (SW of Rivers' Bridge over Big Salkehatchie River, lower left).
-----skirmish at, Feb. 2, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1155; 99:In479. See particularly in Serial 98, p. 97, 405. The other index references are either erroneous or vague in applicability.
Barnwell, atlas 143:F/G-9/10; 144:B/C-9/10.
-----skirmish[es] near, Feb. 6, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1155. NOTE:The editors of the army-records compilation probably intended to recognize the skirmish fought by Atkins' 2d Brig., 3d Cav. Div., just S of Barnwell at the Salkehatchie River Swamp defended by Confederate earthworks. The indexer, however, evidently confused this skirmish with another running fight between Allendale and Barnwell fought by Spencer's 3d Brig., 3d Cav. Div., against Crews' Brig. of Wheeler's Cav. Corps. The index references to Spencer's and Tramel's reports are for the latter skirmish, which, perhaps, should have been separately recognized.
Barnwell's Island, not named in atlas (SW part of Hall Island as shown 144:E-11).
-----skirmish on, Feb. 10, 1862, 6:U88.
-----[Confederate] expedition to, July 30, 1863, 46:C592.
Bates' Ferry, Congaree River, not found in atlas (stated in textual compilation at 98:372 to be six miles below Columbia, 143:D/10).
-----skirmish at, Feb. 15, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3, In1155; 99:In1479. Disregard index references in Serial 98 to reports of Blair, Fitzpatrick, Geary, Mindil, Pardee, and Taylor. NOTE:The indexer evidently confused several recognized and unrecognized skirmishes of the same date. Blair's and Taylor's reports seem to refer generally to the recognized skirmish at Congaree Creek and specifically to an unrecognized but perhaps related skirmish of Duncan's reconnaissance party, 17th Corps, at Taylor's Mill or Taylor's Bridge. Reports of Fitzpatrick, Geary, Mindil, and Pardee relate to the separately recognized skirmish at Two League Cross-Roads.
Battery Island, atlas 131:1 (on E side of Stono River ENE of Legareville, lower right).
-----affair near, May 21, 1862, 20:C18. See also O.R., Navies, I, 13:15, 25. affair on, Sept. 7, 1863 (Operations on Morris Island), 46:C712. Not entered in battle list (a).

Black River, atlas 139:C-3, D-3/4; 143:C-12/13, D-13.
-----engagement on, Aug. 13 [14], 1862, 20:C14. See also O.R., Navies, I, 13:In834. NOTE:Reports in both volumes cited indicate that Union vessels anchored in front of Georgetown, S.C., on Aug. 13 and the engagement did not commence until the vessels proceeded up the Black River on the following day.
Blackville, atlas 143:F-9:10; 144:B-9/10.
-----skirmish at, Feb. 7, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3, In1158; 99:In1483; 111:In1081. NOTE:The reports of Atkins, Hamilton, and Beauregard are not of direct relevance. Atkins and Hamilton discuss activities of the 2d Brig., 3d Cav. Div., in destroying the railroad tracks near Blackville. Beauregard's report similarly refers to the same activity rather than to the skirmish.
Blakeny's, [Blakeny's Cross- Roads], not named in atlas 143:A-12 (first crossroads N of Jefferson).

Not entered in battle list (a). NOTE:The record of events entries for Cos. E, H, and K of the 48th N.Y. Inf. indicate that they participated in this operation.
Boston, Steamer [U], entered in Quartermaster General's Office vessel list 1861-1868, 40th Cong., 2d Sess., House Ex. Doc. No. 337, p. 12 (Checklist Serial No. 1346).

NOTE:This entry is apparently partially, duplicative of the separately recognized entry "Skirmish on the Ashepoo River, May 16 1261, 1864." (SEE UNDER "Ashepoo River").
Boyd's Landing [Boyds], not found in atlas. See O.R., Navies, I, 16:op.66 (W bank of Boyd's Creek, left center).

-----skirmish at, Feb. 4, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1161. Disregard index reference to report of Hazen. NOTE:This is an erroneous entry. Woods' 1st Div., 15th Corps, passed Buford's Bridge (also known as Beaufort's Bridge) on Feb. 4, but no skirmish seems to have taken place. The erroneous recognition of a skirmish probably resulted from a careless reading of Hazen's report at 98:272, which refers to a skirmish near Burord's Bridge on Feb. 4. That fight, however, involving the 2d Div., 15th Corps, has been separately recognized as a skirmish at Angley's Post Office.

NOTE:The editors of the army-records compilation probably intended this entry to recognize skirmishing by foragers of the 2d Div., 15th Corps, on the outskirts of Camden, which began on Feb. 22. The desultory skirmishing apparently continued through Feb. 24, however, by which time skirmishers of the 4th Div., 15th Corps, were also involved.
-----skirmish near, Feb. 23, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3. See also 99:565. Not entered in battle list (a). NOTE:The Union organization involved seems to have been Co. K, 15th Ill. Inf., escort for Howard's Right Wing, Army of the Tennessee.
-----skirmish at, Feb. 24, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3, In1162; 99:In1488. Disregard index references in Serial 98 to reports of Hazen and Earnest. NOTE:The two above-mentioned reports pertain to skirmishing by foragers of the 2d and 4th DivE., covered in the next to last entry here.

NOTE:This operation was imperfectly recognized by the editors of the army-records compilation because a skirmish took place as a result of the reconnaissance. Logan's report pertains to 15th Corps operations at Cannon's Bridge, which are covered in the next entry here.
-----skirmish at, Feb. 8, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3, In1169. See also 98:300; 99:331. NOTE:This operation was imperfectly recognized by the editors of the army-records compilation because a reconnaissance preceded the skirmish; the latter was a direct result of the former and, therefore, inseparable from it. The only references to fighting are in the reports of Jones and Moore at 98:297, 308. The references in other reports cited mention the reconnaissance only.
Carolinas, campaign of the, Jan. 1-Apr. 26, 1865. 98:Ev2, In1162 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 99:In1489 (same); 100:In895 (same); 111:U44, In1087 (same); 126:In1059 (same). -----skirmish[es?] near, Feb. 28, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev4, In 1171; 99:In 1493. Disregard index references in Serial 98 to reports of Carlin, Daniels, and Hobart. Not entered in battle list (a). NOTE:The indexer evidently confused this 17th Corps skirmish with several recognized and unrecognized skirmishes of the 14th Corps; the aforementioned reports pertain to the latter. It seems somewhat conjectural as to whether Duncan at 98:416 and Blair at 99:612 are referring to the same skirmish or to closely related but separate skirmishes. Duncan's reference may, in fact, be to the apparently unrecognized skirmish of Mar. 1, fought by Mower's reconnaissance party and described in Blair's report at 98:381.

-----occupation by Union forces Mar. 3 [-7], 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev4, In1171; 99:In1493. Disregard index reference in Serial 98 to Le Sage's report, and see also 98:22, 92, 202, 391. NOTE:The editors of the army-records compilation recognized only the initial phase of the Union occupation as troops of the I st Div., 17th Corps, entered the city. The 2d Brig. of that Div., however, remained in Cheraw on provost duty, Mar. 3-5, as indicated at 98:96. The entire 15th Corps moved to the vicinity of Cheraw on Mar. 4 and remained through Mar. 6. The 3d Brig., 4th Div., 15th Corps, was ordered into the city on Mar. 5 to take over the provost duties and remained there, serving as rearguard for the Army, until Mar. 7. See reports and correspondence at 98:230, 340, 363, 368; 99:677, 689. Here, as in other instances, there is some question whether the term "occupation" means to pass through or around, to enter and stop at temporarily, or to take possession of by garrisoning.

NOTE:The reference in Blair's report at 98:382 is probably to unrecognized skirmishing by Mower's 1st Div., 17th Corps, on Mar. 4, also referred to by Sherman at 99:681.

NOTE:This skirmish and that occurring at Thompson's Creek on the same day seem to constitute a single operation, though the editors of the army-records compilation recognized separate operations for each. Apparently, there was a running skirmish in which the Confederates were driven from a point just S of Chesterfield through the town itself, and across Thompson's Creek. This entry is also partially duplicative of the separately recognized operation of the same date, "Occupation by Union forces [of] Chesterfield, " as the skirmish occurred, for the most part, simultaneously with the occupation of the town.

-----skirmish at, Feb. 5, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1173; 99:In1496. Not entered in battle list (a). NOTE:The Union troops engaged may have been from the 102d U.S. Colored Inf., several cos. of which were scouting around Combahee Ferry on Feb. 5. The record of events on the muster roll of Co. B of that regt. for Jan.-Feb. 1865 states that Cos. I and B found the enemy in small force near Comba-hee and that after brief resistance the Confederates evacuated their position; the date of this skirmish is not given, however. The captured Confederate officer mentioned in Hatch's report at 99:314 seems to have been Lt. John A. Manget, Co. G, 3d (Palmetto) Bn., S.C. Lt. Art. It does not seem clear beyond all doubt whether Hardee's dispatch of Feb. 6 at 98:1070 is referring to the Feb. 5 skirmish at Combahee Ferry.

-----skirmish at, Jan. 28 [29], 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1173. NOTE:This skirmish seems to have taken place on Jan. 29 in the vicinity of Combahee Ferry. The recognized date of Jan. 28, based on the reference in Wright's report at 98:260, is probably erroneous. Records of events on muster rolls of Cos. D and H, 103d Ill. Inf., and Cos. D, E, and l, 40th Ill. Inf., as well as on the regtl. return of the latter, all give the date of the skirmish as Jan. 29, which agrees with the reference in Ross' report at 98:272. Only the record of events on the muster roll of Co. G, 40th Ill. inf., gives the date as Jan. 28. Records of events on muster rolls of Cos. A, B, F, and H, 40th Ill. Inf., describe a skirmish at Combahee Ferry on Jan. 30. This dating may also be erroneous, or there could have been another unrecognized skirmish at that time. Events may have transpired in the following fashion:an expedition consisting of the 40th and 103d Ill. Inf. departed from Garden's Corners on Jan. 28, marched six miles eastward to Combahee Ferry, and engaged the enemy there on the following day. The 12th lndep., Btry., Wis. Lt. Art., participated in support, having just been ordered to the area on Jan. 29.

Disregard index references in Serial 98 to itinerary at p. 136 and to Force's report, and see also 98:214, 226; 99:1192. NOTE:Reports of Bunn, Earnest, Hazen, Hurlbut, Jones, Oliver, and Pierce are only marginally significant because the 2d and 4th Divs. of the 15th Corps were not actively engaged in the skirmish. The itinerary reference pertains to the recognized 20th Corps skirmishes at Two League Cross-Roads and Red Bank Creek. Force's report pertains to a closely related but unrecognized skirmish involving the 2d Brig., 3d Div., 17th Corps, at Tayior's Bridge, Congaree Creek. The fighting covered in this entry was part of a running skirmish that began as the 2d Brig., 1st Div. 15th Corps, encountered the enemy before Savannah Creek and drove him to Congaree Creek. The skirmishing at each location, however, has been separately recognized.

NOTE:One assumes that Blair, Howard, and Force are referring to the same skirmish, although the reports are somewhat difficult to correlate. Howard at 98:195 and Blair at 98:377 refer to the 17th Corps skirmish at Cowpen Ford but give little other information about the engagement. Force at 98:408 does give particulars about a skirmish of his 3d Div., 17th Corps, at the Little Salkehatchie River but makes no reference to the place designation "Cowpen Ford." Taylor's report apparently pertains to an unrecognized skirmish of a Signal Corps party and Hardee's to the recognized skirmish at Fishburn's Plantation or Duncanville.

-----skirmish at Duck Branch or, Feb. 3, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1177. Disregard index reference to Smith's report, and see also 98:81, 99:285; 111:400. Union troops engaged at "Duck Branch" per battle list (a) 90th Ill. Inf. and at "Dillingham's Cross-Roads" per battle list (b) 48th Ill. Inf., Co. A (one man killed). NOTE:This entry seems to be based on a composite of the corresponding entries in battle lists (a) (b). The entry in battle list (a) in turn was based on the record of events on the regtl. return of the 90th Ill. Inf. that merely refers to the skirmish of the 3d Brig., 2d Div., 15th Corps, at Duck Branch on Feb. 3. The battle list (b) entry was based on a casualty notation on a muster roll for Co. A, 48th Ill. Inf., which shows a Pvt. James R. Wharton killed in action at Dillingham's Cross-Roads on Feb. 3. A return for the same co. describes the location of the casualty as Duck River Cross Roads. All the textual reports, however, place the skirmish at Duck Creek, which seems to be several miles to the NW. The discrepancy could be due to inaccurate references on the muster roll and return, or there could have been a running skirmish between Duck Branch and Duck Creek. Smith's report seems to refer to a closely related but separate skirmish of the 3d Div., 15th Corps, at Duck Creek on the same day.

The action or skirmish seems to have taken place at the river in the vicinity of the bridge, after which time the troops reached the plantation.
[Flora] Flamingo, Steamer [British], blockade runner. NOTE:Ames at 65:108 refers to this vessel as "a large side wheel iron steamer with two smoke stacks... very long, and appeared to be of light draught . . . probably of about 700 tons burden."

NOTE:The report of Foster at 65:27 states that the vessel was "called the Flamingo by the Navy, and the Flora or Florinne by the rebel papers." The report of Ames at 65:108 calls the vessel Flamingo, but the same report as printed in O.R., Navies, I, 16:32, substitutes Flora. The report of Morse, dated Dec. 30, 1865, in O.R., Navies, I, 3:456, refers to a Flamingo and two other vessels still in existence at that time as "old and successful blockade runners." The Flamingo described in Dict. Ships 2:519 is supposed to have survived past 1865 and is referred to as a three-stack steamer, as opposed to the two-stack vessel described in Ames' report noted above.

NOTE:The indexer seems to have confused this skirmish with an unrecognized skirmish of the 17th Corps at the Congaree River railroad bridge near Kingsville. -----skirmish near, Jan. 3, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1187. See also 99:15. Not entered in battle list (a). NOTE:Wheeler's report at 98:1115 seems to constitute the only real basis for recognizing a skirmish at Hardeeville on Jan. 3. It seems likely, however, that the opposing Union troops were of the 3d Div., 20th Corps, which, according to Case's report at 98:788 and Ward's at 99:15, was operating around Hardeeville on Jan. 3. There was also unrecognized skirmishing around Hardeeville on the previous day as described by Hardee at 98:1067 and in the Confederate correspondence at 99:981.

NOTE:This entry may be duplicative of the separately recognized entry, "Skirmish near Secessionville, July 2, 1864." The record of events for this period from the muster roll of the 1st Mass. Cav., Co. G, indicates that the co. arrived on John's Island, June 5, 1862, and departed June 9. NOTE:The basis for this entry is somewhat problematical. The geographic designation apparently derives from Sherman's statement at 99:180, giving a hearsay account of skirmishing around Lawtonville. Wheeler's unindexed report at 98:1121 also appears to describe a skirmish in that vicinity. The intention may have been to recognize the skirmish at McTier's Mill Creek or Tennant's Branch, described in the Confederate correspondence at 99:1062 and in the Union correspondence at 99:170, 172. The skirmish therein described may be synonymous with the references in Wheeler's and Sherman's reports. In any event, it might have been preferable to have recognized the fighting as a skirmish at McTier's Mill Creek or Tennant's Branch.

Disregard index references to reports of Kilpatrick and Mower, and see also 98:584, 599, 610, 670, 854, 1073; 99:1316. NOTE:This skirmish and that occurring at Chesterfield on the same day seem to constitute a single operation, although the editors of the army-records compilation recognized separate skirmishes for each. The skirmish seems to have been a running one in which the Confederates were driven from a point just S of Chesterfield, through the town itself, and across Thompson's Creek. Selfridge at 98:610 mentions picket skirmishing on Mar. 3, but the major action concluded on the previous day.
-----skirmish near Cheraw at, Mar. 3, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev4, In1228. Disregard index references to reports of Salomon and Selfridge, and see also 98:92, 391; 99:1317, 1320. NOTE:Actually there seems to have been a running skirmish between Thompson's Creek and Cheraw, as described by Smith at 98:412, wherein Mower's 1st Div., 17th Corps, drove Hardee's troops out of intrenchments at Thompson's Creek, through Cheraw, and across the Pedee River. The indexer evidently confused this skirmish with the separately recognized skirmish of the 1st Div., 20th Corps, at Thompson's Creek near Chesterfield; Salomon's and Selfridge's reports pertain to the latter fight. This is apparently a duplicative entry for the skirmish otherwise recognized for the same date under the place designation "Juniper Creek."

The indexer seems to have confused an unrecognized skirmish or skirmishes of the 14th Corps in the same vicinity and on the same day with the recognized skirmish at Two League Cross-Roads. Reports pertaining to several other apparently unrecognized skirmishes around Lexington are also cited. The designation "Two-League Cross-Roads" appears only in the itinerary at 98:136. The other references describe the skirmish as taking place in the vicinity of Two-Notch Road. This skirmish seems to have been a part of a running fight from Congaree Creek to Red Bank Creek to the Two-Notch Road.

-----first [Union] assault on, July 11, 1863 (Operations on Morris Island), 46:Ev199, In765 (Battery Wagner). Disregard index reference to report of Jackson at 46:349, and see also 47:191 and O.R., Navies, I, 14:319.
-----[Confederate] sortie from, July 14 [?] -15, 1863 (Operations on Morris Island), 46:Ev199, In766 (Battery Wagner). See also 46:47, 75. NOTE:The report of Rion at 46:541 indicates that the sortie commenced "about 12 p.m., " which places the action entirely or almost entirely on July 15.
-----second [Union} assault on, July 18, 1863 (Operations on Morris Island), 46:Ev199, In765 (Battery Wagner); 111:In708 (same). See also 46:63; 47:206, 207, 209, and O.R., Navies, I, 14:In804 (Fort Wagner). NOTE:This is a dupli-cative entry because the assault took place as part of the separately recognized "[Union] siege of Battery Wagner, July 18-Sept. 7, 1863." See next entry here.
-----[Union] siege of, July 18-Sept. 7, 1863 (Operations on Morris Island), 46:Ev199, Sk29, 263, In766 (Battery Wagner); 111:In1708 (same); atlas 26:2; 38:2; 44:1-2, 4. NOTE:This is a partially duplicative entry, for the separately recognized "Second [Union] assault on Battery Wagner, July 18, 1863, " took place as a part of the siege. See last entry here.

-----skirmish near, Feb. 22, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3. NOTE:This is a seemingly erroneous entry. It was apparently based on the reference in Ross' report at 98:372, stating that a sect. of Btry. H, 1st Ill. Lt. Art., fired one round while in position at Peay's Ferry, Wateree River. Logan's report at 98:229 and other published 15th Corps reports and correspondence, however, indicate an absence of Confederate troops in the vicinity and hence the unlikelihood of a skirmish at that particular time and place.
West's Cross-Roads [West's Corner], atlas 79:3, sect. II (NW of Camden near headwaters of Big Pine Tree Creek). skirmish at, Feb. 25, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3, In1233; 99:In1581. Disregard index reference in Serial 98 to report of Bunn.

-----skirmish at, Feb. 1, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev2, In1233; 99:In1582. See also 99:294. NOTE:There seems to have been a running skirmish fought between Poco-taligo and Whippy Swamp Creek as well as fighting at the Creek itself.
White House, near Hilton Head, not named in atlas 144:F-11 (on an island about one-half mile from Pinckney Island, also not named in atlas which is between Skull [Scull] Creek and Mackay's [Mackey's] Creek, next to Hilton Head Island).

-----skirmish near, July 3, 1864, 65:U408. See also 65:14, 47, 51, 121, 124; 66:553. NOTE:This is a duplicative entry for the skirmish otherwise recognized for the same date under the place designation "King's Creek."
White Pond, [Aiken County], not found in atlas (NW of Williston on, South Carolina Railroad in vicinity of Pond Branch, 143:F-9; 144:B-9).
-----skirmish near, Feb. 8, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas) 98:Ev3, In1234; 99:In1582. See also 99:352, 1128. Williston, atlas 143:F-9; 144:B-9/10.
-----skirmish at, Feb. 8, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev3, In1234, 99:In1584. Disregard index reference in Serial 99 to Allen's correspondence, and see also 98:858. NOTE:There seems to have been one running skirmish from Williston to White Pond, but the editors of the army-records compilation recognized a separate skirmish for each location. See last entry here. -----skirmish at, Mar. 1, 1865 (Campaign of the Carolinas), 98:Ev4, In1235. Disregard index reference to Blair's report. NOTE:The indexer seems to have confused an apparently unrecognized skirmish fought by a reconnaissance party of the 1st Div., 17th Corps, near Cheraw with the recognized skirmish of the same day at Wilson's Store in the vicinity of Lancaster. Union troops engaged against Wheeler's Cav. Corps in this instance would more likely have been from Kilpatrick's 3d Cav. Div., operating in the vicinity of Lancaster at that time.
