HISTORICAL NOTES:
The following "Remarks" are recorded on the muster roll (May 23, 1861) of this Company when it entered Confederate service:
"My company was accepted by Governor Pickens on the 8th day Jan 1861 by virtue of authority vested in him to accept into the service of the State So. Ca ten thousand volunteers to constitute an armed force for said state by act of General assembly of said state passed in Dec 1860, was called into active service on 9th day April 1861 remained in the state service till the 23rd day April when it was ordered to the state of Va, and is now in the confederate service for the balance of the term of service due the state of So. Carolina

This Company was mustered into Confederate service at Camp Davis, near Richmond, Va., May 23, 1861, by John Scott, Captain, C. S. A., Mustering Officer.

The muster roll of May 1, 1862, contains the following "Record of Events":
"Lt J. J. McKain mortally wounded on picket on Tuesday the 15th and died on Thursday the 17th of April. Within the last month Co E marched to Orange C H and been transported from there to the peninsula. It has done the usual amount of picket duty on the line but fortunately has not suffered much. The loss of the above named gallant officer was the only casualty happening to the Co. At present Co E is encamped on Skiff Creek and ready for any emergency."
The following "Record of Events" is entered upon the muster roll of November 1, 1862:
"Sept 1st found Co E in Maryland, Company was at the Bombardment of Harper's Ferry Sept 13th, 14th & 15th 1862, Engaged the enemy on Maryland Heights without loss. Fought at Sharpsburg Md Sept 17th 1862 with the loss of three killed and three wounded, Passed into Va on the 19th of Sept and encamped near Winchester Va"
The following "Record of Events" is entered upon the muster roll of January 1, 1863:
"Co E commenced about the 1st of Nov to fall back from near Winchester and after a long & fatiguing march encamped near Culpeper. After a short respite the march was resumed and the neighborhood of Fredericksburg reached where the Co is not encamped. Co E took a part in the battle of Fredericksburg and had twelve men wounded."
The following "Record of Events" is entered upon the muster roll of February 28, 1863:
"The company has been encamped near Fredericksburg for the last two months. Nothing of importance has happened to it -"
The following "Record of Events" is entered upon the muster roll of July 1, 1863:
"Co E took a part in the battles of Chancellorsville and Loar Church in the early part of May. Marched from Fredericksburg to Culpeper and from thence across the Potomac into Maryland and Pennsylvania."
The following "Record of Events" is reported on the muster roll of September 1, 1863:
"Co E took part in the battle of Gettysburg Pa. and had three men killed on the field and 4 or five wounded, of whom one has since died. The captain was there disabled by the loss of his right leg - Shared the fatigues of the retreat from Gettysburg Pa, and Hagerstown Md - Has since marched by easy stages to its present camp in Spottsylvania Cy, Va."
The following "Record of Events" is entered on the muster roll of October 31, 1863:
"Since last muster the company has been Transferred from the army of N. Va. to the army of Tenn., was in the engagement at Chickamauga Sept 20th 1863 and had three men killed and five wounded."
