South Carolina 1st (Hagood's) Infantry Regiment
Company B



 


Company B, of Orangeburg District, entered State service, April 12, 1861; volunteered for Confederate service, at Summerville, July 20, 1861, and was mustered in at Summerville, by Thomas S. Mills, A. A. A. General, Mustering Officer, August 22, 1861.

The following muster rolls of the Company are available and from them the succeeding roster has been compiled: August 22, October 31, and December 31, 1861; February 28, April 12, and December 31, 1862; April 30, June 30, August 31, and December 31, 1863; June 30, August 31, October 31, and December 31, 1864, and February 28, 1865.

The muster roll of December 31, 1861, contains the following exhibit:

"Coles Island S C 26th Feby 1862 This is to certify that Capt G B Lartique Q. M. 1st S. C. V has this day paid to my company Three Thousand and twenty two dollars and forty two cents in full for pay & clothing bounty as stated in this roll-

At the Reorganization the Company, which had been recruited up to over one hundred and twenty enlisted men, was divided into two companies and the men of each company elected their officers. The parent company remained Company B in the reorganized Regiment and the second company became Company K thereof.

The muster roll of April 30, 1863, contains the following comment:

"Encamped near Franklin Va. March 13th 1863. Remained there until April 1863, when the Regt marched and bivouacked near Suffolk Va. A distance of about twenty five miles. The Company having been in no engagement during the interval of the above dates".

The following comment is entered on the muster roll of June 30, 1863:

"Left Blackwater June 12th 1863. Marched to Petersburg (60) sixty miles. The Company has been in no Engagement since last Muster."

The muster roll of August 31, 1863, contains this comment:

"The Company has been in no engagement since last Muster".

This company surrendered 5 officers and 17 privates at Appomattox.

    Inabnit, James A. - promoted from 1st Lieutenant, July 12, 1862; wounded at Fredericksburg, December 13, 1862. Jas. R. Hagood says (Memoirs, under casualties at Fredericksburg): "Orangeburg S. C. Compound fracture Fibula near the ankle by a shrapnel ball. Ball extracted. Result, anclylosis."     Toole, C. - enrolled at Columbia, July 6, 1863, and assigned by the Commandant of Conscripts, July 19, 1863; on muster roll of December 31, 1863; not on that of June 30, 1864. Jas. R. Hagood says (Memoirs, under casualties at Campbell's Station, November 16, 1863): "Barnwell, S.C. Received minie ball through left elbow joint and fell in the hands of the enemy. Recaptured on 6th day after and gangrene of the arm found above the wound. Arm removed at the shoulder joint. Gangrene seized the stump and death 6 days after."

    Ulmer, Adam A. - enlisted at Summerville, August 20, 1861; reported on muster roll of February 28, 1862, as absent on furlough; reported on muster roll of April 12, 1862, as present; re-enlisted at Cole's Island, April 12, 1862; died at General Hospital, November 10, 1862.

    Ulmer, M. M. - enlisted at Cole's Island, April 12, 1862; sent to hospital, sick, January 4, 1863; reported on muster roll of April 30, 1863, as still in hospital; reported on muster roll of June 30, 1863, as present; wounded at the Wilderness, May 6, 1864, and not reported present on muster rolls of June 30, August 31, October 31 and December 31, 1864; reported on muster roll of February 28, 1865, as having been left in the hands of the enemy when wounded at the Wilderness.

    Vann, T., J.- enlisted at Summerville, August 13, 1861; went to Company K at the Reorganization, April 12, 1862.

    Viner, (Given on muster roll of August 31, 1864, as Leviner.) Thomas - enrolled at Columbia, July 22, 1863, and assigned by the Commandant of Conscripts, August 4, 1863; captured by the enemy, January 22, 1864; reported on muster rolls of June 30, August 31, October 31, and December 31, 1864, and February 28, 1865, as in the hands of the enemy.

    Wannamaker, J. C. I. - enlisted at Cole's Island, March 31, 1862; elected 1st Lieutenant at the Reorganization.

    Wannamaker, J. M. O. - enrolled at Columbia, September 15, 1864, and assigned by the Commandant of Conscripts, October 17, 1864; on muster roll of February 28, 1865. Present at surrender at Appomattox, listed as J. M. O. Warnamaker.

Hagood in his Memoirs, says, under casualties at Groveton, Va., August 29, 1862: "Orangeburg, S.C. Minie ball passed through left Carotid artery. Fatal hemorrhage in a few moments.

    Williams, James - enlisted at Summerville, July 20, 1861; re-enlisted at Cole's Island, April 12, 1862; reported on muster roll of April 30, 1863, as sick at General Hospital since February 15, 1863; reported on muster roll of June 30, 1863, as present; on muster roll of February 28, 1865. Present at surrender at Appomattox.

    Williams, Joseph M. - enlisted at Charleston, May 20, 1862; reported on muster roll of December 31, 1862, as absent without leave since August 25, 1862; reported on muster roll of April 30, 1863, as present; wounded near Campbell's Station, Tennessee, November 14, 1863; and not reported present on muster roll of December 31, 1863; not on any subsequent muster roll. James R. Hagood says (Memoirs, under Campbell's Station): "Orangeburg, S. C. Received minie ball through right thigh and fell in the enemy's hands. Reported by a Citizen to have died after escaping from the enemy 2 months after."

    Williams, Mosley F. - enlisted at Summerville, August 7, 1861; re-enlisted at Cole's Island, April 12, 1862; reported on muster roll of December 31, 1862, as sick in hospital since November 18, 1862; reported on muster roll of April 30, 1863, as present; on muster roll of February 28, 1865. Present at surrender at Appomattox.

    Wise, A.     Wise, H. G. - enlisted at Cole's Island, March 31, 1862; reported on muster roll of December 31, 1862, as sick in hospital since December 6, 1862; not on any subsequent muster roll.

    Yon, William P. - enlisted at Summerville, August 7, 1861; on muster roll of April 12, 1862; not on that of December 31, 1862. The unofficial compilation says he went to Abney's Battalion.

    Zeigler, D. A.- enlisted at Summerville, July 20, 1861; reported on muster roll of October 31, 1861, as on furlough, sick, reported on muster roll of December 31, 1861, as present; re-enlisted at Cole's Island, April 12, 1862; killed August 30, 1862. "Rivers's "Roll of Honor" says at Second Manassas. James R. Hagood says (Memoirs, under casualties at Second Manassas): Orangeburg, S. C. Canister shot through Thorax killing instantly.

    Zeigler, D. W.- enlisted at Summerville, July 20, 1861; reported on muster roll of October 31, 1861; as on furlough, sick; reported on muster roll of December 31, 1861, as present, re-enlisted at Cole's Island, April 12, 1862; promoted to 3rd Corporal August 30, 1862.

    Zimmerman, A. O.- enlisted at Cole's Island, April 12, 1862; reported on muster roll of December 31, 1863; as sick in hospital since November 5, 1863; died of disease, April 24, 1864.
