STATE TROOPS
I have been accumulating information on the units raised in 1864 and 1865 of boys (when the age of conscription was lowered to 17) officered by old men. For the most part, they were around 16 (14 to 17) and had 1 or 2 older men as senior officers. They served as prison guards at Charleston and Florence Stockade and as support troops in the Battle of the Carolinas. The units carried Battalion designations and served in South Carolina and North Carolina, by war's end. If you know of or have any article, publication, pension applications, applications to the Confederate Home, or book on the subject OR if you had an ancestor in such a unit, I would love to hear from you. I am not looking for proof as much, although it would be helpful, just names, where born and/or joined, unit name, where served, officers, etc. My long term goal is to publish a book or booklet to insure that these boys are not lost to history. Little information is at the SC Archives and less at the US Archives. It is up to us.

CANNON
I am looking for information to prove that my gggrandfather died in the Cival War. Because of his age and time of death, I think that was how he died. He was John M Cannon, He was born 1823, I think in the area of Spartanburg. He was living in the Horry district at time of his death. He was dead in 1866, because that is the begining of the estate papers. I have found a record of his name, dying in a Union prison, but it list him as being from Ga. The wife's name is the same as his second wife. In the estate papers she said that she would like the estate settled as soon as possible because she was leaving the state. I think this may be him that died in the prison, but the state is wrong. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Wanda

DUNN and JORDAN
I am looking for both of my great grandfathers participation in the Civil War. The first is Mitchell Dunn born 18 Jul 1846 died in Cartersville SC 16 Feb 1916. He was born in Davie Co. NC so may have enlisted in NC, not SC. But tombstone states that he "fought four years in the last war". Second is Alford Jordan born 27 Nov 1829 died in Cartersville on 12 Apr 1909, his tombstone also says that he fought in the Civil war. Don't think either was above a private and they may have had some connection with boot training that occurred in Cartersville, SC.

If so, I would appreciate it if you could lookup my gg.grandfather. His name was Samuel McCrary, b. 1845 in Pendleton, South Carolina. I believe he joined in the latter part of the war (maybe after 1863). I would think that he joined in South Carolina, but I understand that quite a few went to Georgia, for some reason, and joined up there.

From: Mom407Dot

I was doing some research in the Greenville, SC Library and found in their vertical Family Files a 1st person account which had been copied into a notebook from which I transcribed it. this account was by an elderly man who told his story for his granddaughter and was later dopied into the genealogist's notebook. I will be happy to share this with you, but do request that the Library and the Symmes SC Room be given credit for this piece. As it turned out this individual had connections to my husband's great grandmother's family. Following the war the person who told the story lived in Belton, SC.

I am not sure I can attach a file to an e-mail but would be willing to try, if you're interested in the article. The individual served the entire time of the war and recounts the feelings at the end after the surrender when Gen. Wade Hampton had to come after them and persuade them that it was best for all to surrender. There was also a listing of some of the members of the unit which ws made up some time after the war and gives the last known place of residence and/or whether the man was alive or had died. I had felt that it was a very valuable piece of history and for that reason transcribed the piece. The notebook that I transcribed it from remains in the Library.

John, I have John Wesley Major.. there were two John Wesleys from Pickens area..My John was not a prisoner.. I also had Great Grandfather Nimrod Kelly Sullivan.. He was a prisoner of war ... He signed up in Oconee co. His brother in law, Thomas Bellotte was killed ..I think they were both in Orrs Company.. Nimrod's brother John Sullivan was with Lee at Apomattox. Charles Mattison who was a Col. was Nimrod's brother-in-law. He was wounded at Seven Pines. I don't think I have helped much.. Mrs. Vandiver's book on Anderson give some on Soldiers..
