Historical Notes:
The Mississippi 1st Artillery Regiment was organized in 1862. Some accounts say early 1862, Crute sets the organization as late summer. It originally had eleven companies. During the war some served as both light and heavy artillery, but not as one command. The regiment was assigned to the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, and Companies A, C, D, E, G, I, and L were captured at Vicksburg July 4, 1963, paroled and exchanged Sept. 12, 1863. Companies B, F, H, and K were captured at Port Hudson, and following parole in mid 1864, Company H was formed into the 1st Artillery Battalion. After being exchanged, Companies A, B, C, D, F, G, I, K, and L were assigned to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Lousiana, Company E to the Trans-Mississippi Department, and Company G to the Army of Tennessee. Crute states that the regiment was disbanded before the end of the war. Other accounts state that the regiment was surrendered May 4, 1865.
