The Civil War in Louisiana
More than 500 battles, engagements and skirmishes occurred in Louisiana. As the South's largest city and major port, New Orleans was a primary target. Possession of the city was necessary for control of the Mississippi. New Orleans was also the site of large commercial, financial and industrial firms.
In April 1862, a Union fleet under Flag Officer David G. Farragut began operations against the Crescent City.
