3rd Cherokee Regiment of Volunteer Cavalry

HISTORICAL NOTES:

The original 'Bryan's Battalion' contained quite a few whites, some who were Cherokee citizens or white residents of the Nation but many that were not. It appears many of the whites came from Benton Co. AR. This battalion later became the core around which Adair's 2nd Cherokee Mtd Vols was created, Feb. 3, 1863.

Joel Mayes Bryan was given another command late in the war -- Bryan's Cherokee Battalion for Special Service. Unfortunately little is know about this command. This would fit the 'imprecise' designation of "3rd Cherokee Cavalry", the first two being 1st Cherokee Mtd Vols (Watie's) and the 2nd Cherokee Mtd Vols (Adair's). The reference to Arkansas is due to the need for a Confederate State to create an official regiment so on paper the units raised in the Indian Territory were designated as Arkansas units.
