[Brothers] Alexander and Mark [Travis] were farmers, and they were already well established in the community. But they were very different in other ways especially in regard to religion. Shortly after the turn of the century South Carolina underwent a religious revival which was partially sparked by the visits of the wandering evangelist Lorenzo Dow. Many, including Alexander, were converted. Mason Locke Weems had called Edgefield by the name of Pandemonium, meaning home of devils, and Alexander was among those called to change the county's reputation.
