The following story is found in Chapman's History of Edgefield County.

I have heard a story of the brothers George and Sampson Pope, that may interest the readers of this book. They were both neighbors of Gen. Butler, and Sampson was warmly and devotedly attached to him. At some time, it appears, that George was so unfortunate as to become very angry with Butler. In his anger and resentment he spoke very harshly on him, which gave great offense to Sampson. He felt so embittered by the abusive language George had heaped upon his friend Gen. Butler, that it seemed to him they could no longer live in the same neighborhood together. So he presented George with a fine horse and a purse of five hundred dollars and requested him to leave the District and go West, which he did. Many years afterwards an acquaintance from Edgefield traveling in Alabama, in search of new lands upon which to settle accidentally cam across him, remained all night,
