today on Martintown Road. The city now known as North Augusta has undergone a number of name changes over the years. Hammond originally designated the area Richmond, but it later became known as Cambelltown and Hammond referred to his home place as "Snow Hill" because of the cotton which blossomed in every direction. Today "Snow Hill" is the area known as Hammond Hills and the Riverview Park.
Before the war he was a justice of the peace and captain of a militia company; and being a good surveyor, and a man of sound, practical sense and judgement, he had great influence. He was one of the first in Edgefield and, perhaps, in the State, to lay an embargo upon tea, by excluding it from use in his family on account of the arbitrary acts of the British Parliament. Tea had long been their favorite beverage.
William Henry Drayton who was well known and wrote passionately for freedom and William Tennant, the Presbyterian Minister prominently involved in "The Awakening" visited the upstate and Hammond was greatly influenced by their passion for freedom.
