The 1779 Tax List for the Old Ninety-Six District shows John, Jacob, and Leroy Hammond. Leroy was a Captain in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary war. His nephew, Samuel Hammond, also distinguished himself in the war and afterwards. By the time of the 1790 census, Leroy is believed to have died. His will was recorded in 1790 and his wife, Maryann, is shown as head of household on the census. Samuel was living in Savannah, GA at this time.
