First Families of Edgefield County South Carolina

Henry Mouzon's Map - 1775

This detail shows the New Windsor Township (Swiss Settlers) and the area around Fort Moore. The map also identifies three other townships, Saxe Gotha, Londonderry (Palatine Settlers), and New Bordeaux (French Settlers).

In 1737, 200 settlers from Appenzell, Switzerland colonized New Windsor, leaving the names of Tobler, Zubly, Nagel, Sturzenegger, and Meyer to local history. (The names Zubly, Nagel and Meyer do not appear on the 1790 census.)

A number of names appear on the map. A project for the future is to carefully go over the map to identify all the names in Edgefield County. Here are some we have identified.
