First Families of Edgefield County South Carolina

Zachariah Smith Brooks

Zachary Smith Brooks was of the party that executed Matthew Love along with General Butler and others and his grandson Thomas Bird, 19, fought a duel with Mr. Wigfall for his grandfather and young Tom was killed. Tom's father, Daniel Bird, left the area and settled in Monticello, Fla. (Jefferson County now) Story #1 is somewhat covered in O'Neals, "Annals of Newberry" page 235. #2 was told to me by the past historian of Saluda County, Motte Yarbrough.
