Nicholas Murphey came with Oglethorpe in 1736 as one of the rangers who came to Fort Fredrica to protect the colonies. I have his rifle which was issued to him when he came. He received a land grant in Augusta and his son, Edmund was said to be the first white child born in Augusta. Edmund was also in the revolution in Augusta and is said to have been the only survivor from what is called "the White House" on Washington Road. The family also includes Dr. Eugene Murphey who owned what is called "The Government House on Telfair St. I also have part of the library of Moses Collins Murphey who lived at 508 Walker street, fought in the War Between the States and was a successful business man after the war. His library was said to be the only taxed private library in Augusta.
