MILTON opposing him, and LAMAR especially taking off many votes that JONES would have received had he not been in the field. He was again elected in 1844, by a close vote, after a spirited contest with the able Whig candidate, Wm. H. CRAWFORD of Sumter. He served as a Democrat in the Twenty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1845-March 3, 1847); died in Columbus, Ga., March 18, 1864; interment in Linnwood Cemetery.
