Colonial and Revolutionary History of "Upper" South Carolina

IF we accept the testimony of able and truthful writers, we may readily conclude that the sun never shone upon a country more beautiful and attractive than this of ours as it appeared in primitive times. It was with enthusiasm that the ancient hunters spoke of it.

This book has been written not only to bring together, but to renew chronicles of the past, reviving deserving names, characters and traditions that had once been the hearthstone talk of generations long since passed away.

Should my humble efforts meet with the approbation of those in quest of reliable and interesting historic reference, my purpose shall have been attained and my ambition for this volume realized.

For the many favors and courtesies which he has received in the preparation of this work, the author extends his grateful thanks.
