Arkansas 51st Militia Regiment



HISTORICAL NOTES:
This regiment was mustered in 4 - 19 March 1860 in Sebastian County under the command of Col. Samuel L. Griffing. Col. J. B. Latham appears on the roster as Commander.

The only known Civil War-era record of the 51st Regiment is a payroll dated May 29, 1862, covering the regiment's annual muster for inspection and drill, held March 4-14, 1862, at Fort Smith.
ROSTERS: The roster of this regiment contains the names of 321 men.

  • "Fort Smith Rifles" Captain James H. Sparks January 12, 1860. Sebastian. Became the Arkansas 3rd Infantry Regiment Company A. Disbanded after the battle of Wilson's Creek.
  • "Bell Point Guards" Became the Arkansas 5th Infantry Regiment Company G. Disbanded after the battle of Wilson's Creek.
  • "Sebastian County Volunteers" Captain Jackson J. Edward August 7, 1860 Sebastian.
  • Horse Company "Mountain Rangers" Captain Joseph M. McDonald August 30, 1860 Sebastian
  • "Independent Artillery" Also known as "Fort Smith Battery" Captain John G. Reid September 27, 1860 Sebastian. Became the Arkansas 1st Artillery.
  • "Light Cavalry Company Fort Smith" Also known as "Sebastian County Cavalry" Captain Thomas Lewis May 17, 1861 Sebastian. Became the Arkansas 1st Cavalry Regiment Company B. Disbanded after the battle of Wilson's Creek.
  • "Volunteer Company Cavalry" Captain Thomas McCamon May 27, 1861 Sebastian
  • "Volunteer Company Cavalry B" Captain Henry C. Dunne June 5, 1861 Sebastian
