WordNet ® is a lexical database system with focus on the relations between word senses. WordNet is developed by Professor George A. Miller and the Cognitive Science Laboratory at Princeton University.
WordNet is a registered trademark, owned by Princeton University. The WordNet system includes databases, software and documentation. The latest version covers over 140.000 English word forms, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and proper names, but not function words (articles, prepositions).
WordNet can be freely downloaded, installed and distributed. WordNet can even be freely included in commercial products, if the original copyright notice is preserved.
These years we see an emerging breed of computer systems, known collectively as the Semantic Web, aiming at bringing computers to understand text. Many of these projects are largely related to WordNet. See f. ex. the long and growing list of alternative implementations and interfaces to WordNet.
For more information about WordNet, see the WordNet Homepage. A few essential sources are listed in our short WordNet bibliography.
There is also an online version of WordNet.
