MiniDic is a free release of HyperDic, covering an essential vocabulary of 1111 frequent English words.

MiniDic is freely available for download and redistribution. The latest version consists of 1200 XHTML pages, packaged into a 1.6 MB file, compressed with tar and gzip. To unpack it, you need appropriate decompression software, and 14 MB free disk space.

How to download MiniDic

Thanks to the Internet Library, there is a very easy way to get the latest version of MiniDic: the minidic package is now located in the Text Utilities directory of the MetaLab collection (formerly known as Sunsite). MetaLab can be accessed by http as well as anonymous ftp, and there are many MetaLab mirrors around the world.

MiniDic can also be retrieved by anonymous ftp from the original download directory ftp://megadoc.net. To login, use anonymous@megadoc.net, both as username and password.

Please note that you must use "binary mode" to download the package: if you use "ascii mode", you will not be able to unpack the files. In many cases, binary mode will be set automatically because of the file extension. Depending on your system, you may even be able to just drag the package link onto your desktop, but it is also possible that you will need to choose the download option from a menu in your browser.

How to install MiniDic

First, you must unpack the downloaded package. For this you need a program that can decompress files compressed with tar and gzip. These programs have always been a standard part of Unix systems, so they will already be available if you use Sun, Linux, BSD or Macintosh OS X. On Windows, you might need to first install WinZip, or a similar program.

MiniDic is not a program, but just a collection of text files. So, once the files are unpacked, MiniDic is actually "installed".

How to distribute MiniDic

Just do it: you may freely use, copy, modify and distribute the above-mentioned free offline MiniDic package, under the terms of the standard Artistic License. You may distribute the package on any medium, without paying any fee to the copyright holder, and eventually repackage the provided files for distribution, using any alternative compression method (or without compression).

If you distribute more than a few copies, it would be nice if you send an email to the publisher at info@hyperdic.net providing some information on your activity. We will be happy to set up a hyperlink from hyperdic.com to alternative download sites.

Please contact info@hyperdic.net, if you have other questions.
